According to Encarta: gazar: a stiff loosely woven silk [Mid-20th century. Origin ?]. From Answers.com: A loosely woven silk with a crisp finish. [Probably ultimately from Arabic qazz, raw silk. See <http://www.answers.com/topic//topic/gauze>gauze.]

According to some of the links that came up on Google, it's sometimes used for bridal gowns. It sounds like it's a heavier weight than gauze, but of similar loose weave.
