Since an "inn" of the time had everyone sleeping communally (I believe), who wouldn't rather go through labor and delivery in the peace, privacy and warmth of the barn/stable. That's what I would have chosen. I always thought it funny that everyone seems to think it was a bad thing that they got the stable.
