I just watched this 'at home' over the hollidays and was puzzled especially by the skirt extensions (or lack of same)..Your suggestion about the designers were using the right scholarship but ...badly... is certainly my take on the overall projection of Ren Fashion. I was also quite put off with the appearances of "dirty linen" showing at the neckline. I assume that it was unbleached muslin. Knowing what the Inventories list and how much Elizabeth loved dressing up, I don't think that this take on realism suits well with her (presumed) character.

Finally watched the latest (!!) Pride and Prejudice last eve and if ever there was a film that proclaims the Publication Date, this is certainly one of them. Again, the skirts caught my eye first. Oh how they clung and how billowy . Silk "on the farm?" I don't think so. I was also disappointed that more of Jane Austin in the script was not used. The whole farm setting was not quite what I think "Living in the Country" was in the early 19th C for a middleclass family down in funds. The whole interpretation of Elizabeths character lacked the depth that other productions have succeeded in making her out to be. Therefor,
P&P is hardly more than a working title with some casche.

I don't know if the PBS series "The Virgin Queen" is showing in all necks of the woods, but it just started here in Colorado this past Sunday. I'm wondering what you all thought of it, costume or otherwise?

I enjoyed it the first time it aired in 2005, but I'm not watching it the second time around. I thought they did a reasonable job of telling the story and making it realistic, but I seem to recall a lot of folks hated it.
I made ruffs (so I know accuracy was not paramount!) for this show, and saw some of the clothes in the making - they were using Janet Arnold and Jean Hunnisett. However, they weren't using them very well in my opinion, as the clothes were no better than any of the other Elizabeth films in recent years.
