The coat is not based on anything, it's a Turkish Ottoman style caftan probably
bought from a Turkish import shop. I used to find these at garage sales and at
second hand clothing stores quite often. I used to have a stunning blue and
silver one just like in your picture - except that I outgrew it. *sigh*

Thanks! I was getting to that conclusion myself last night, having ruled
out Mongolian or Chinese styles. The sleeves and buttons kept saying
"turkish" to me, but I hadn't yet found a good source. The hat looks
like some Tatar drawings in my Tilke book.
