Had to look up the Holbein Double running stitch, but now I see what it is.
Also I think I understand Genie's suggestion. I'll try both. I was
planning on using it to stitch all the folds in the ruff as well - hopefully
the little x's will work there - everything I've tried, has worked itself
loose.

Thanks,

Sg

So, are you using the silk for the embroidery part? One of the
things I have found with silk, from the Chinese, is that they sew a
tiny x with the silk floss, and then run the needle under the x and
tighten it slightly to knot the end. To start, they sew the x over
the tail of the silk thread. I usually cover my knots with
subsequent embroidery. This pattern seems to be more open, so that
might not be possible, but it's how I get my silk to never work free.

If that doesn't make sense, I'll try to find some pictures of what
I'm talking about.

Good luck
Genie
