Dear Kathleen,
Is it the book with embroideries?
I have it, got it as a gift.
Page 46 says "made of silk velvet with scattered sequins of silver, possibly silver over copper. Sequins, also known as paillettetes , were traditionally made by coiling a circular silver wire tightly around a long core of wood or metal. The word sequins is younger than spangels or paillettes, it is from the time where they became quite cheap and commersially made in plastic.

Bjarne, have you seen this book from the Ward collection at Snowshill? The illustrations of photos do not give a real explanation of spangles and sequins as compatable with metal discs as I have seen with Your work. This puzzles me.

Seaquins and spangels are the same. Its round flat metal cirkles with a hole in the middle. Most were made of silver and gold, in 18th century they started to make colloured ones made by silver foil wich was vernished in collours. There also was other shaped ones, wich they called paillons in france. They could have more holes to stitch it to the surface with.
If you want to read more about it i recomend the book:
Art of the Embroiderer by Saint Aubin.
He was a master embroiderer to Louix XV.
