Acetone is probably NOT 'Eating' the needle At All, as
acetone in neutral in pH and not reactive to metal
sewing machine needles.

If the sewing machine needle is coated with any
polymeric or organic material, acetone will help to
remove it.

Which is why acetone will help (briefly) by removing
the nasty glue from the sequined fabric which coats
the needle.

The longest c.24 yards of straight stitching I've ever
done were of this material, cleaning the needle off
(once I discovered the problem by the thread's
repeated breaking) approximately every 16mm. XP
