Sixties Dress codes.(1965-1967....Girls were not allowed to wear slacks, jean or shorts to school, thought to be too daring. Skirts had to be no more than one inch above the knee, if thought it was, would be required to kneel and length would be measured. If shorted the girl was sent home. We were not suppose to wear sleeveless dresses or blouses...but since school did not have air conditioning it was allowed.
Cheerleader and drill team, no short skirts, they came to the knee also...
Preferred dress code, dressed or skirts and blouses.
The fellows had it just a tough....if they had pants with belt loops, there must be a belt. Tied shoes must be tied. All must wear socks with their shoes. In fall many would purchase new long sleeve shirts...by springtime elbows would be bare, they were allowed to cut them off but they had to get them hemmed. Hair could not be longer than the collar unless they could prove they were a member of a band/rock group. Some of the fellows who's hair did not meet school standards had letters sent home to parents, if after three attempts to get them in line the Principal and Vice Principal would walk the across the street to the State Trouper Barracks and they would do the hair cuts...more military in length than not.
Many in my school were Military Brats and families keep us in line....
Dress codes began to change slowly in Virginia...
After hours dress now that was a different thing if the parents would let you out of the house the way you wished to dress.
See attached photo I recently found of a group band from 1968

Everything got more interesting as the years moved into the 70"s, very short dresses, just to the fingertips and of course then end of the Vietnam War .

Hope my added thoughts are ok with you all.
Paige
