Hi, All. I am curious, did the original poster mention what part of the 16th C. they are recreating? I don't know of any extant garters from the period (the whole period, 1500-1600) that are knitted, and imagery of the period that I have seen neither confirms or denies the base of material used. I seem to vaguely remember a written piece that might shed some light, but what it was, and from when, I can't remember. The place to look, IMO, is in the Stuart Press books from Stu Peachey in England. He and his group have done extensive research into many subjects of the period in question. If the questioner is just looking in general, as opposed todoing some sort of scholarly or judged work, I'd suggest making a pair (in wool, of course) and fulling them. Many recovered pieces of knitting from the period have had to be looked at very closely to determine the method of manufacture, and, besides, the elasticity of knitted garters is one of their benefits. As some of our reenactment ladies mention, if you are up under my skirts checking something, you had better have a damned good reason...Good Luck, Mike T.
