I saw a  dress in the Metropolitan Museum several years ago that had a very   
small warp-dyed paisley design.  Shawl-like borders were also  used,  
probably 
more frequently.

Also, Regency gowns taking less fabric than the old Georgian gowns, one  
could be made from a large shawl or two, or a sari.
