Would silk twill have been used for any of these garments?
Not likely. I don't know the history of this particular textile, but
most modern silk twills are too limp to make good 16th-century
gowns. You'd have to underline the heck out of it to get it to hold
up properly, and it's probably not worth it.
I'm not
necessarily going for super-upper class with the loose gown, by the
way. I was
thinking of using some cotton velvet I already have for the loose
gown; would that
be warmer than the silk twill, or would it all depend on what I
lined it with?
The velveteen would definitely be warmer than the silk, though of
course it does depend somewhat on what you use for lining. A
velveteen lined in just about anything would be warmer than the silk
unless you lined or underlined the silk with a not-too-thin wool.
Honestly, though, that sort of silk is just too thin and drapey for
that purpose and will only cause you heartache if you try to use it
for the outside. It might make a good lining for the velveteen, though!
