WOW! Thank you for the allegorical insights-and a new pic. to me! I always just assumed the Bruegel stuff was either loss of control of the netherstocks, or purposeful rolling down to keep cool. The short construction is really wild. Picture 12 of 12 has the points in front but look at the back of the hose in 6 of 12.
Ooooh, I have always wanted to do a men's Breughel, and now I want to do it even more. I betcha' in the reconstruction I might find some clues as to why they do both these things. As to the "well dressed fellow," I suspect Hope is right, that there is some meaning for it, but also, dandies did all sorts of weird things, just as "they" do now. Well known examples are the wearing of hoods with the face opening on top of the head, and there is even a contemporary commentary (criticism) of men wearing their trews loose around their hips (and their plumber's crack showing - I think)!
