I remember the uproar in academic circles about "Elizabeth" offering the "history" packets. This after the director blathered on and on in interviews about how he wanted to tell a modern story and discarded most of the history.

"Shakespeare in Love" was much more interesting. It proudly took up the mantle of historical fantasy, and yet it captured the period much better.
