There is a form called Assisi work, uses the same stitches as blackwork, but was often worked in red, and I believe there's extant examples of that from the 12th cen. (1100's). I'll see what I can dig up.

Yes, it's Italian, named after the town Assisi. It uses Holbein stitch and long-armed cross stitch. My book doesn't have a date.

However, I'm not sure how they look on the back.
