  COMMENT
For those of us running on Microsoft platforms, doesn't "Word" contain a "Font Character Set" subfile, giving one all the keystrokes needed to produce characters which do not normally occur in English/American text? "Alt+0230" for 'æ', for example?

In XP if you go to All Programs -- Accessories -- System Tools -- Character Map you will see a chart with all available characters in a particular font. Choose your font at the top. You can then select and copy whichever character you need and paste it into the document. When you select a character you will also see at the bottom right corner the keystroke to get that character in your document.
