I would recommend looking in the OED for old versions of modern words. For example, Velvet: 1320, veluett; 1351, velvet; 1400, felvet; 1483, feluett; 1538, veluettys (pluerel); 1555, veluet. Added bonus: it references the source, which is in several cases a wardrobe account.
