Also, look in a store that sells cake decorating supplies - they often have bags of "wedding bands" that can be put on cakes. They are metal, but very lightweight, and can be bent to any size. They are really cheap (like a bag of 50 for a couple dollars). They look ok even at a fairly short distance and if they break, well, you've got a whole bag of them.
