It might help to turn them inside out before they go in the wash, too. As clothing rubs against each other the threads in the weave break and put up tiny tufts of fiber which on black clothing can make it look grey.

There are some detergents which have agents in them that "eat" these microscopic tufts of fiber and help make your clothing look new longer. However, it also eats your fabric every time you wash it, which in the long run shortens the life of the garment.

And check and make sure the detergent doesn't have bleach, or bleach substitutes hidden in it. That stuff will fade clothing faster than anything.
