My bread-and-butter work is freelance editing; I have been a journalist and editor for more than 25 years and went freelance when I had my first child, in 1993. Most of my freelance work is consumer medical editing, but I work in other areas as well.
Editing the journal Medieval Clothing & Textiles doesn't pay -- and it does take a huge toll in time and energy. The tiny honorarium I get as editor might just cover the physical costs involved in doing it, e.g. postage, Xeroxes, etc. I get a little income from my lecturing on medieval costume, and I dedicate that money to cover my expenses for research and publishing: photography, conferences, journal subscriptions, memberships, books, Xeroxing, photo permissions for published articles. I don't make many costumes these days -- primarily my outfits for lecturing, proof pieces when I'm working out a new theory, and occasional garments as favors for friends. (So why do I keep buying fabric?) My third income comes from making and selling bead jewelry, which is as much of a hobby as I can claim; it pays for itself, but probably not for all the time I spend shopping for and playing with beads! --Robin _______________________________________________ h-costume mailing list [email protected] http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
