I was in D.C. this weekend for a professional meeting and didn't get out of the hotel (frustrating!), but I did have a drink with a friend (and former dean) who is a docent at the National Portrait Gallery. He's very enthusiastic about the Great Britons collection, which he says both very interesting and high-quality. He particularly mentioned the Elizabeth and a Shakespeare. If you visit the exhibit and your docent is Al Schmidt, tell him I said hi.

In addition to the other exhibitions mentioned for a possible DC meet-up, the National Portrait Gallery has "Great Britons, " portraits from the last 500 years, including the Ditchley portrait of Elizabeth. Since it was mounted a an adjunct to the Queen's recent visit, it may have some very interesting portraits to see.
