Beth,

See the Mardi Gras Museum next door to the St. Louis Cathedral. The costumes are wonderful and so creative. The museum is the building to the right of St. Louis. The Cathedral also has some nice statues. I don't know since the Katrina...about nighttime safety... But we took a carriage ride at night pre-Katrina. The vampire and haunted walking tours were on-going . Our driver encouraged us to make ghostly sounds when passing them. It was a hoot! We laughed ourselves silly. The tour also takes you by the oldest tavern in the city. The waiter will come out to your carriage, take your order, then deliver it to you while you are in the carriage. If you drink, try a hurricane but only drink one. It will stay with you for the night. The Mardi Gras shops on Toulouse St. have some wonderful beads. A friend of mine likes coffee. I bought her a necklace with coffee cups on it. The specialty necklaces prices are around 3 for $10. In the morning, it is really nice to walk around the French Quarter and see the hanging gardens from the balconies. There are wonderful coffee and pastry shops in the Quarter. St. Louis Square is a wonderful place to people watch. You will see all kinds of people.

If you have a car, drive down St. Charles St./the Garden District or take the streetcar named "Desire" to the District. The old southern homes are beautiful!

If you have time, LSU, Louisiana State University, in Baton Rouge always has a wonderful costume exhibit. Check their website.

I will warn you to dress in light, breathable clothing. If you have a hand fan, bring it. It is really hot and humid on the Gulf Coast this time of year. I am originally from Biloxi, Mississippi and do not travel home, this time of year, if possible. I say that and had to go home for the past two summers. Praying that I don't have to go home this summer!
