Thursday I went to a local second hand store to check out textile corner.
The usual fare is acrylic yarn odds and ends, plastic canvas books and
scraps of quilt material. (However, once I found several yards of hand-woven
linen toweling from Ireland!)
Well, what a FIND was waiting for me! I finally straightened it out and
measured it today. SEVENTEEN (!) yards of 60 inch wide fabric. It's a
beautiful shade of dark blue with maroon, light blue and gold large floral
motifs. The whole piece weighs just over 11 pounds! It's about the weight
of light denim -- heavier than shirt weight, lighter than jeans weight. The
weave seems to be an undulating twill background with brocade sections where
the flowers are. Nice and tight, no easily snagged parts. It also doesn't
have that pellon-like backing that is often found on upholstery fabric. It
feels like all or mostly cotton fiber content. (oh, and the total price:
$20! It probably cost more per yard when it was new)
I bought it with the intention of making window and bunk curtains in my
vintage (1965) camper, but the more I think about it, the more I think it
might be too dark for such a small space.
Maybe I'll have to make a full circle floor hooded length cape and really
give people a *reason* to think I'm nuts.... I have no idea what Historical
purpose this fabric could be used for, but the cape might make a good entry
for the Aluminum Swan competition :-)
