I haven't done any research, but I would speculate that they would need to wrap or tie something around them in order to keep the linen "pads" in place.

There was a discussion on this very subject here in Jan 06, if you want to look up what's already been posted. Not that new discussion isn't wanted, but you can read what folks have already figured out, and what theories we have.
