I wish I could remember where I read it but on some extant pinked clothing
there was a glue substance that I thought sounded like our version of fray
check. Also some weaves and fabric do not fray as badly as some with wear
and tear. And considering that there are extant garments that are pinked, it
shows that they are not that weak. In Janet Arnold's book, PoF 1560 - 1620,
pg. 149 a green satin doublet with major pinking and cut. I doubt that a
farmer would have a pinked doublet as the pinking is not practical but
middle class might.

I think the idea was it so weakened the fabric, it couldn't be re-used. Or
maybe it could be re-used, but not as originally intended. Silk could be
used for a gown for a noblewoman, but only as facings for someone of lesser
rank. I will try to remember/find where I saw the reference.

So how would a middle class or poor person deal with a pinked or slashed
hand me down?
