Carol certainly has a legitimate conflict that is not easily resolved. However, Andy, if a bit grumpy today, is also correct. It is nearly impossible to schedule these events, regardless of their purpose, without conflicting with something. Keep in mind that other events are not the only consideration. Also in the mix are the available venues and their costs. Each event requires certain types of facilities. Costume-Cons, for example, are space hogs. We need a certain number and type of rooms as well as a ball room amenable to the stage events. In conjunction with that we have to negotiate a weekend that where the prices quoted by the facility are amenable to our pricing structure.

I gather that Carol's event is an annual event that likely uses the same facility year after year and employs the same organizing committee. (correct me if that assumption is incorrect). It therefore has a "in" with its facility. The facility can count on an event which will bring it a certain amount of revenue on a given weekend. It is therefore likely to be willing to offer price concessions and other incentives.

Costume-Con changes cities each year. It is also run by different and unique committees each year. (CC 24 and 25 were unique and unprecedented with me as co-chair in both years. ) Each committee has to negotiate from a position of non-repetitiveness with the facilities. (And possibly only one or two which actually have the amenities we require.) So it is not unusual to have the dates "forced" on us by the available facilities as well as potential conflicts.
