I don't know what headword you would use for this (the Tudor Tailor calls it a yard cloth, the Medieval Tailor's Assistant calls it a kerchief I suspect Yard Cloth would be the more period term) but the many and varied uses for a simple rectangular/square piece of linen would be something I'd like to see.

My brain is fried and that's all I can think of that hasn't been covered elsewhere. This topic springs to mind because I am heavily involved in recruiting new people to the SCA who have never sewn a button before, many people think hats when you mention headwear and they therefore believe it's too hard but when I give them a piece of white cotton (my budget doesn't extend to giving away linen, yet) and show them how to use it (and not just for headwear, it's an apron and a partlet and an emergency dishcloth among other uses) I have been told on one occasion that it is the most useful gift anyone has ever given them.
