The best bet may be to layer stockings. You usually wear upper-class
clothing, so you would want your outer stocking to look good. Is it
an outdoor event or just cold indoors?
The other thing to look out for with thick stockings is that they may
not fit correctly with your shoes and may stretch them. For your
look, you would want a fine worsted anyway, not coarse and thick.
One extant stocking example in the Met in New York has had the foot
removed and is hemmed around the top of the foot. They probably took
out the worn portion, and there is enough that you could not tell
with shoes on. They are an intricate silk knit (1790s), possibly
salvaged to wear over a plain stocking.
And you can be sneaky and wear a modern thermal stocking underneath!
