I'm no expert, but could blue refer to a super bleached fabric? Isn't a bluing agent sometimes used to whiten discoloured white fabric?

True white, as measured by a spectrometer, is, to most of our eyes, a touch yellow. What we expect when we think of white is biased a little bit towards the blue.

What does this mean to us?

A blue wash acts to blunt the yellowing in fibers and make them look more "white." It's the original reason that old ladies used blue wash to tint their hair. Like so many things that started out as a good idea, it's often a touch over-done.
