This could be really fun to poll the list. Lurkers come out, wherever you are! About how many costume/fashion related books or magazines do you own? Never actually counted, but a couple of bookcases full. (Actually with a (not so) little pile next to the bookshelf of ones that won't fit. Eek!) What was the first one you purchased? Where did you purchase it? Erm... think it was patterns of fashion (the 16th c one) at a library sale. either that or metric pattern cutting when I was at college, from either waterstones or the college shop (student discount). What was your most recent purchase? A book on ancestral jewellery. And one on British naval uniforms. At Chester-le-Street market! What do you think was the best deal that you have every made when purchasing a publication? Not sure. Obscure books picked up for 50p at oxfam etc, probably. About how many period photographs do you own just for the costuming? I have no idea - probably in the region of a couple of thousand. What book or magazine is your most treasured...if your house was on fire, you would take it with you. One of my Nana's 30s sewing and tailoring books - she gave me it for my 16th birthday. What is the worse costume book that you own? I know Robin has a collection! Several, but probably the one that I don't remember the name and auther of that goes through history by reign of monarch... (sorry - memory is swiss cheesed at the mo). If I still had the John Peacock I had for a while at college I'd say that, though. Do you have a room devoted to your collection? Nope - it's in my sewing room. When did you start collecting? Technically when I was 16, though have never looked on it as collecting as such. Do you consider your collection for business or pleasure? Is used most for work, but I do just like to look at the pretty pictures! Optional questions: How many sewing machines do you own? What types and age? 4 Pax - 1960s (poss late 50s). Not sure of brand (was boyfriend's nana's) - 1970s Brother - about 5 years old (work back up). Bernina - about 15 - 20 years old - my main work machine. Oh, and does the mini overlocker that I use very occasionally count? Doesn't cut, does edge - is about 10 years old. How many sewing patterns do you own? Commercial ones - around fifty or so - but haven't really looked at one in years. Blocks and patterns I've cut - thousands I'd imagine, though I've never counted. But I apparently average around 200 - 300 garments a year, so.... >I would like to add one more question: >Time to come clean...What was the most price of you have ever paid for a book, collection of work, etc. We won't tell your mate! LOL! You don't have to >name give the title, just in case you were taken to the cleaners on a purchase. Example: a book and the amount. Erm..... Book, don't remember which, but one of the out of print cunningtons - about 60 quid or so. Except I got a discount, so £55?
