I don't have many, and likewise on sewing professionally. I have one that I use all the time, one that's a back up in case that goes down, and two that are of sentimental value that are at the back of my big walk in cupboard (one was my Nana's, one was Nige's Nana's). Don't think I''ll trade my current one in when I need a new one though, as that belonged to a friend's grandmother.... Other than that, one machine plus one back up would be my rule.
