Fashion Designer Yves St. Laurent died June 1, 2008 http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/06/01/laurent.obit.ap/
Last week I videotaped from the Sundance channel a documentary about him titled "Yves St. Laurent : His Life and Times/5 Avenue Marceau 75116 Paris." The film is in French with English subtitles. It is very good and has extensive interviews with him at different points in his career. There are also interview with other designers that were his friends. I checked and amazon.com is selling the DVD. Some YSL fashion history: YSL took over the House of Dior when Dior died. YSL had many first in the fashion industry, womenswear division: 1958: Trapeze dress while designing for House of Dior. 1959: Bubble dress while designing for House of Dior. 1962: The 3/4 length coat. 1962: First designer to use a black model in Paris fashion shows. 1963: Thigh-high boots. 1965: Dresses based on the paintings of Mondrian. As my daughter said, "This is one of the most famous dresses in the world!" Judge for yourself: http://www.metmuseum.org/TOAH/ho/11/euwf/ho_C.I.69.23.htm 1966: The smoking or tuxedo jacket and suit. 1967: Knickerbocker suit. 1968: Culottes, see-through blouses 1968: Safari Jacket. 1969: Trouser Suit or American call it pantsuit. This suit made it socially acceptable for women to wear pants for all kinds of occasions. 1971: Blazer 1976: Introduced his Cossack or Russian Peasant Collection. This collection made YSL one of my favorite designers. We studied the collection while I was earning my Associate's degree in Fashion in 1976.
