I got this link from this group. It intrigued me, so I made the sarafin using
the dimensions from the article, and using a light-weight linen. When I tried
it on it hung all wrong. The drawing has a drape to it that the linen just
doesn't do. More than that, the way they show it the silk bands across the
front don't show very well. I found that if I folded the front into two large
pleats, one under each brooch, the bands showed nicely, and it hung very well.
I went back to the article and found a link to the original Russian article. I
copied it and pasted it to Microsoft Word and then used the translation
function in Word to do a literal translation. Picked up a little more info....
but the eye-opening thing was the drawing... there is a second drawing that the
English article leaves out! This drawing shows the front folded with a front
placket and a large pleat under each brooch! The English article has a
footnote referencing this drawing with a link to it...
http://pskovarheolog.ru/imgs/docs/68-156.jpg , and noting that the way the
sarafin was drawn would be difficult to wear because the straps would fall
down, but it states that it is an apron added to the front of the sarafin to
hold it together! I can see why they think this, but after my experiment I am
convinced that it is an alternate folding (I think the correct one!) of the
material.
Thought you'd find this interesting! Kathy
PS I've mostly lurked on this group, so it's fun to actually have something to
share!
