Interesting. In most portraits of, say Anne Boleyn, or Catherine Howard, the "crown" part of a French Hood seems to be over the ears or in front of the ears, unlike this coin....which does have the coif over the ears but the "crown" behind them.

You folks might be interested in knowing that the upcoming volume of Medieval Clothing and Textiles (due out April 2009) includes an article on French hoods, by Melanie Schuessler (who is on this list). In the article, Melanie examines artworks and written references (in inventories, letters, etc.) for evidence on the various components of the headdress and the terms that might have matched up with each part. The overall shape and other details changed over time, and the terminology is a real maze as well. This medal is one of the images Melanie discusses. Her analysis is much too detailed to describe here (and really requires that you read the whole article) so I won't try to summarize it, but I'd encourage anyone interested in this headdress to read the article when it appears.
