Looking at it, I am wondering if it is some sort of metal thread embroidery, 
done on the diagonal, and just done at the top area to sort of emphasize the 
top vs the remaining black bottom of the loose kirtle. I think the top portion 
would be easier to embroider that way, as from the belt portion down, the 
fabric flows & drapes more than the upper portion. As to why diagonally, I 
don't know.

It is also interesting to my eye that the belt is exactly at the widest portion 
of her waist, as if to emphasize just how pregnant she is at that point. I 
remember putting on a girdle to my Tudor gown when I was heavier and hating how 
it ended up making me look even bigger than I thought I should be, but being 
fat vs. being proudly pregnant is two different mind sets.
