There is a type of handicraft formerly practiced in Scandinavia that is neither knitting nor crochet, but worked with (wool) yarn and a bone needle very like a tapestry needle. It's more historical/traditional than current I think, but I've seen exemplars and the work produced is very dense and tight -- looks a bit like a herringbone weave as I recall -- and is particularly suitable for heavy mittens. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and if so, can you tell me what the technique is called and whether I can find information on how to do it anywhere?
