And you will need to have a narrow ground warp, no more than about 22" wide, due to the limitations of weaving in a fine, stiff wire that needs to be kept straight (anything longer will bend and not cover the ground evenly). Whatever you use as a substitute for the velvet wires must be 1) very stiff and 2) very smooth. According to our speaker, the keys to producing good velvet are the quality of the velvet wires and the control of the warp tension of the pile threads.

Now that you've whetted my curiosity, what are you planning to make?
