This squares with my recollection. FULL skirts, all around, even if
pleated. In '61 the assistant principal in my public-school junior
high walked up and down the lunch line and did the "kneel
test" (skirt had to touch the ground when the wearer was kneeling) on
any girl whose skirt seemed a little short, and a girl who failed had
to go home, or else go to the sewing room and let the skirt hem down.
Before '61 there was no such trouble--everyone wanted to be like the
highschool girls and wear skirts to mid-calf.
I had a couple of pleated skirts (bought in the store), some store-
bought shirtwaist dresses (very full skirts gathered evenly all the
way around), one CIRCLE SKIRT, and a lot of skirts with unpressed
(box) pleats, made by my mother or me. I was pretty much in fashion.
With the pleated skirts, knee socks definitely completely closed the
gap between hem and sock top.

Clothing coupons had been abolished in 1948 so that by 1952 clothes
were at last liberated. Hemlines which had plunged rapidly with
the new look, finally settled at mid calf length, eleven and a
quarter inches off the ground. Dolman sleeves, swing back coats
and stand away collars were popular. Skirts could be pencil slim
or a mass of sun ray pleats. Lots of these looks were achieved by
using 1950's fashion sewing patterns.

I just saw _Julie &Julia_ ans thought I saw something wrong. Could
the ladies and gents on thelist correct me if I am wrong. The woman
who is given the origional manuscritp for Julia Childs book is
wearing a plaid skirt. It appears to be either a full or 3/4 circle
skirt that has some of the fulness pleated in the back and then
hemmed to the bottom on the knee.
I thought they were fuller all around and midcalf length. This is
circa 1958-1961.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Jodi
