If you are doing historical costume in the time period of this book, it is
interesting to see ancient dress from the vintage point of view of "History".
Recreating h-costume? for theater productions such as "You Can't take it with
You" or maybe "One Touch of Venus" may require designs that are more naive than
present knowledge of what ancient dress was really like...especially if there
is nothing extant to study. Referring to Hollander again, one recreates the by
gone styles in terms of the present aesthetics. A study of the Movie Costumes
of the past century often displays the fantasies of some of the great
designers...who cares not a hoot for Historical Costuming.? And isn't this the
very thing that often comes up on this List whenever any past period gets
interpreted by 'ignorant' directors and designers.

Subject: [h-cost] Opinions on this bookI have a copy of "The Encyclopedia of
World Costume", by Doreen Yarwood. Any
opinions on this one? Is it worth saving or should I toss it?
