My 86 yr old mom (who wore those things) says their should be 2 little balls
and they wrapped around each other, or one ball had an "outie" and one an
"innie" and they connected together.

My theater's costume collection also has a stole, or scarf, or shoulder
drape (we're not sure how it was meant to be worn) with two minks sewn
side-by-side and a single mink below. There are no clips, but the single
mink has a cord with crocheted ball hanging from the underside.
