I am having glasses made at a store called "The Frame and Eye," at 904
Irving, near the medical school, in San Francisco. I like round frames
with round lenses because they not only look steampunk/Victorian,
optically it is the best shape for my prescription.
Anyway, this place carries one metal frame style with round,
medium-sized lenses. It is available in several metallics--a kind of
mottled red inspired by tortoiseshell, grayish blue, and silver/nickel.
Possibly brass/gold, and black, can be ordered. These are modern-made,
new frames, not old store stock. They are not a designer brand, but they
come from some specialist supplier in New York (who was not available
this weekend for a check on the availability of the brass
or the black). I would say they are intended only for women because the
head sizes looked small to me for men. I thought the frame price was
reasonable as frames go these days.
You might have to specifically ask the store owner to display the round
frames to you. He said they are really popular with some customers
(steampunkers?), but not with most.
The store owner is very experienced and knowledgeable. He was willing to
carefully explain the optical advantages and disadvantages of every lens
shape, and all the available materials and coatings. He was willing to
go over everything not only in his stock but in his catalogs. He did not
do any kind of hard selling, or urge me to choose alternatives just
because they were the most trendy or the most expensive.
