My favorite memory of hall costuming.
Kayta Barrows was a close friend of mine. She often judged "something"
at . . . Oh gosh. Forgot the Con name! Memorial Day in San Jose: is
that SiliCon? Kayta had been costuming longer than me, and often
helped me fit my muslins, as I helped her fit hers.
About l995 or so, Kayta was to be judging hall costumes. She had not
(for once!) helped me fit my latest costume, an 1895 bicycling outfit
with convertible skirt. Hat with matched taxidermied duck wings (a
project we had worked on, but hadn't discussed uses for). Canvas
leggins with shoebuttons. Hatpin I'd made myself. I decided to wear
the ensemble as a hall costume and surprise her. (its first outing: it
also went to Costume Con that year)
I got a small piece of white silk which fit a large brooch, and
inscribed it with the words "Fabric time machine."
Kayta spotted me from far down the hall. I knew I had her when she
doubled over with laughter.

The workshops that Robin did last year were outstanding!
<blush> Glad you liked them. It was great fun.
I've been to, hmm, three Costume-Cons, and had a blast every time.
I've always come as a guest speaker, giving multiple lectures or
panels, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity.
