The Oxford English Dictionary gives -
Coutil. (a. F. coutil, (kuti), in 13th. c. keutil, f. keute, coute, mattress, quilt.) A close-woven sort of canvas, used for mattresses, pillows, and in stay- making.

Perhaps some of these alternate spellings may help.
