On the ones I have, both been gives and bought, a good final polish with fine grade steel wool makes them smooth as glass. You want your loops to pull along smoothly. I don't recommend the cheap ones cut with a hack saw from thin plywood however. You may be putting a significant amount of tension on the prongs.
