Surely, to get into garments that are too small you would need to cut the armholes, waistband etc, not just stretch the body of the fabric? I'd vote for the "conspicuous consumption" theory. BTW, the spelling is KNECHT (related to the English word "knight" which originally meant a manservant, then a military follower).
