I had this same confusion a couple of weeks back. The answer as far as
I determined was that you do indeed need to use a file-based DB for
multi-JVM access. I also used the AUTO_SERVER feature so that no
matter which process first tried to access the DB, it would spring to
life and be available to all the others, but without me having to run
a dedicated 'server' process that needed to stay up. This is a killer
feature if you ask me!
