I also did some more experiments playing with the lob-settings.

System.setProperty("h2.defaultMaxLengthInplaceLob", "512");

This forces the system to write the lobs dir - my messages really are
smaller then the 4k default.

The behaviour is like this:

- h2.db still grows, of course much smaller than before
- the lobs-dir grows too. Individual lob-directories are empty - but
the number of directories grows and grows and...
- ActiveMQ througput is about 4x slower than with the defaults

System.setProperty("h2.lobInDatabase", "true");
System.setProperty("h2.defaultMaxLengthInplaceLob2", "4096");

No change, to my first mail, h2.db grows.

Whats also strange: When I start to delete the file also grows, but
much less than inserting. Perhaps there is some transaction log
somewhere which doesnt get ever cleaned out ?

Regards
Alex
