One thing I have learned in my coding career is that the programmers
should
have the freedom to choose whatever programming tools they prefer.
I personally never abandoned jEdit in favor of Eclipse but I can clearly
see the rise
in popularity and functionality of Eclipse. And at some point I was
becoming a bit jealous
and doubting my commitment to jedit when there was no activity in that
project.
I personally choose to program with a text editor because I don't like
an integrated
development environment but a good set of tools that I use separately.
From beginners point of view it would be easier to start developing h2
outside of an IDE.
All you need to do is to install commandline svn, checkout, edit source
files with a text editor
and run 'ant jar' on the commandline.
Of course if you start developing on a daily basis then the benefits of
an integrated ide
become obvious.

I don't hate IDEA just find eclipse more convenient for me. If it
doesn't work for you - you just don't understand it. Even the best
instrument will be useless in monkey hands. So this is the reason to
blame yourself but not eclipse.
I confess I don't understand Eclipse. There is clearly something about
me that means I cannot use it. I'm not sure that explains the silly
error messages and crashes that it exhibits, but hey, I'm more than
happy to blame myself, and my monkey hands.
This week I have encountered the absurd Eclipse bug which means I
simply cannot accept a licence
(https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=277265) as well as it
bleating at me that 'An internal error occurred during "Decoration
calculation"'. Whatever that means.
I LOVE Open Source, but Eclipse is the exception to the rule. It's
just plain broken. I would rather use vim and custom tags than
Eclipse, because vim works!
We don't need to continue this conversation -- I'm glad Eclipse works
for you, and I really wish it worked for me too. It just doesn't.
