I'd like to add another vote for changing the extension to a single- dotted type like .h2db or such. Then it would be possible to associate the database files with an application, but as it is many SDKs (such as Netbeans RCP) do not allow filename extensions with two dots. File chooser dialogs often allow the developer to define a filename extension filter to select which files to show - as it is the trace file would also be shown in such a dialog. It should get a different extension in my eyes.
Also, there are conceivably other database products out there, who use a .db extension, so something along the lines of .h2db would really make things easier.
