Thanks, Panayiotis ! I tried these options and now HSQLDB and H2 run about equally fast :) Seems that in my application the amount of time spent for database operations is too small to decide which one is faster. Both seem to be very good options but I chose now H2, because it uses less files and data file is smaller.
