Hi, I have for several years now, been developing a number of database applications using H2, running under LibreOffice. All of my macros are written in LibreOffice Basic, which relies heavily on Java. I notice also that H2 is written in Java.
However in LibreOffice 4.0 there has been a concerted move away from Java. Base seems to be one of the few LO components that still require Java. It seems that the LO developers are concerned about Oracle's stewardship of Java. The LO people still say that they will continue to support Java, but I'm somewhat nervous about how long that may be so. Their recommendation seems to be that users should write their macros in Python (or another non-Java language) and that databases should also be non-Java based. I have been very happy with H2 and I have over 4000 lines of Basic Macro code. The thought of needing to start all over again with my applications is a daunting one, to say the least! I realise that in IT circles it is very hard to predict the future of particular languages, but I'd be interested to hear others' thoughts on this subject, especially relating to Java's future and what implications, (if any), this might have for H2 itself.
